class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. A Week<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between Monday 20 and Friday 24 October 2026, one claim travelled through four texts to four readerships. It went to a scholarly journal of religion and culture, a philosophy journal, the church&#8217;s weekly and a general news magazine, each in a form fitted to its readers. The claim stayed the same: a reading of Scripture can be tested against conditions stated in advance, and the test does not depend on who runs it. Every text was dated, and the working pages and prompts behind them were left open. That makes the week a case anyone can check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A case of this kind does not need a narrator. What matters is not who wrote the texts or what was intended, but whether the order of events meets conditions that it could also have failed. For that reason the week is recorded here the way a laboratory records a run: dates, documents and what changed between them. Five working days are short enough to be checked in an afternoon and long enough to contain a whole plot. They are the smallest unit in which the claim can be tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same shape is then laid against a much longer stretch of time. The Reformation of the sixteenth century can be read through the same seven phases, from Erasmus&#8217;s Greek New Testament in 1516 to the Peace of Augsburg in 1555. On a clock the two cases are not comparable, since one lasted five days and the other four decades. On a story arc they may be, if the turn falls in the same place and the conditions for each phase are met in the same order. Chronos and Kairos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A clock and a story measure different things. The Greeks had two words for time: <em>chronos<\/em>, the time that passes and can be counted, and <em>kairos<\/em>, the moment when something becomes decisive. A clock is built for <em>chronos<\/em>, and by its measure a week and the Reformation have nothing in common: five days against several decades. A story is built for <em>kairos<\/em>, and it counts turns rather than hours. By that measure the question is not how long something lasted but which phase it has reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The week began with a question that every editor now has to ask. A journal of religion and culture had provisionally accepted an article that read Paul&#8217;s letter to the Romans against the opening chapters of Genesis, and it asked how much of the text a language model had written. The question was fair, and it aimed at the familiar target of authorship. Yet the article was the result of a reading tested many times before, and a share of typing could say nothing about whether that reading held. A carefully aimed question had missed its mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The danger in seeing the same shape everywhere is that it may lie in the eye rather than in the events. For that reason each phase needs a condition written down before any case is examined, so that a week or a century can fail it. The trigger is a question that sets the plot moving while aiming at the wrong target: an editor asking about authorship, or in 1517 a monk asking what indulgences could buy. Conditions that anyone can check do not depend on who sees the shape. The Same Shape, Larger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rising action begins when an answer, instead of closing a question, makes it larger. On Tuesday the question of how much a machine had written was answered with an essay for a philosophy journal. The answer was not a percentage but a distinction: a language model computes what is plausible, and only rules agreed before the result decide what holds. That answer ended the dispute about authorship and opened a larger one. If rules decide, anyone who applies them stands where only experts used to stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Reformation rose in the same way, only over four years rather than one day. The theses of October 1517 were written for an academic disputation on penance and indulgences, but printers turned them into a pamphlet that crossed Germany within weeks. At Leipzig in 1519 Luther was pressed until he conceded that councils too could err, and a debate about indulgences became a debate about authority. In 1520 he answered the papal bull against him with three treatises and then burned the bull in public. Each answer raised the stakes instead of settling them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The condition for rising action can be stated before the cases are compared: each answer widens the question it was meant to close. Tuesday meets it, because the essay on the plausible and the necessary moved the issue from one text to every reading checked by rules. The years from 1517 to 1520 meet it too, because every reply drew the dispute closer to the question of who decides. One phase lasted a day and the other four years. Measured in turns rather than days, they are the same length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The Turn in the Middle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In both cases the turn comes in the same place: the fourth of seven phases, the middle of the plot rather than of the calendar. On Wednesday the opening question, how much of a text a machine had written, changed its object. If a result checked against agreed rules does not depend on who produced it, it does not depend on who interprets it either. The question now concerned the seat from which readings of Scripture are decided. That day an essay asked the church&#8217;s weekly whether artificial intelligence will displace the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Worms in April 1521 the same shift took place before the emperor. Luther was shown a table of books and asked whether they were his, and he said they were. Asked next whether he would recant them, he answered the following day on quite different ground. He would not recant unless refuted by Scripture or plain reason, since popes and councils had often erred and contradicted each other. From then on the issue was no longer who had written the books but who could say what Scripture means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The condition for a turn can be written down before either case is examined: the question changes its object and cannot return to the earlier one. Wednesday meets the condition, since after it the authorship of a single essay no longer mattered. Worms meets it too, since after Luther&#8217;s answer no one asked again whose books they were. One turn took a day and the other a night between two hearings, yet both stand fourth among seven. A clock places them on very different scales; the plot places them in the same spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. What Cannot Be Taken Back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the turn, the consequences no longer stay with those who set them moving. On Thursday the claim went to Suomen Kuvalehti, the magazine that in 1971 had introduced the young exegete Heikki R\u00e4is\u00e4nen to its readers. In the long debate that followed, one worry kept returning: what would happen to the faith of ordinary churchgoers if research reached them directly. As long as results passed through experts, they could be argued over and the congregation could be shielded. A reading anyone can check against stated conditions leaves nobody in between and no one to shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Reformation the same moment came when the text reached people who had not been invited to the dispute. Luther&#8217;s German New Testament appeared in September 1522, and within a few years it was read in villages as well as universities. In 1525 the peasants of southern Germany published twelve articles that justified their demands from Scripture and asked to be corrected only by Scripture. Luther, whose argument they were using, condemned the uprising, and it ended in tens of thousands of deaths. The text he had opened could no longer be closed by him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The condition for pathos is that the consequences outrun the intentions of those who began, and cannot be taken back. Thursday meets it, because a checked result cannot be unchecked, and the question of who may hear it is settled once anyone can check it. The year 1525 meets it, because a printed Bible could not be unprinted, whatever its translator later wished. The suffering is not comparable, and the condition does not claim that it is. Seeing from Inside<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognition comes from inside a plot, and it comes late. On the fifth day the four essays could be laid side by side: one claim, sent within five days to a scholarly journal, a philosophy journal, the church&#8217;s weekly and a general news magazine. Only then did the sequence show its shape, with the turn on Wednesday and the widening that followed it. Nobody inside the week had planned it as a plot. The shape became visible only when the week could be seen as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The texts at the centre of the week describe the same movement. In Genesis the first question put to the human being is &#8220;Where are you?&#8221;, and the answer is to hide. In Paul&#8217;s letter to the Romans a voice describes aiming at one thing and reaching another, and the turn comes when the voice sees where it stands. Aristotle called this moment <em>anagnorisis<\/em>, recognition, and placed it near the end of a plot. It is the point at which the one inside the story sees the shape of what has happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The condition for recognition is that the shape becomes visible from inside the plot, after the turn and not before it. The fifth day meets it, because the four texts had already been sent when their order revealed a plot. The Reformation meets it in the confession presented at Augsburg in 1530, when the movement first stated in its own words where it stood. In both cases recognition did not create the shape; it found one that was already there. That is what makes the measure of time testable: the shape can be checked after the fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. The Measure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A plot can be measured in two ways, and the two give different answers. Measured by the clock, the week lasted five days and the Reformation four decades, and nothing joins them but the calendar. Measured by turns, both pass through the same phases in the same order, with the turn fourth and recognition near the end. The conditions were written down before the cases were examined, and either case could have failed any one of them. That neither did is not proof of a law, but it is a result that anyone can check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last phase is the quietest. In the Reformation it came with the Peace of Augsburg in 1555, which did not decide who was right but fixed the new situation in law. In the week it has not yet come: the four texts are with their editors, and the replies are due by the first of November. The resolution will not close the question but decide where it is held from then on. An open ending is part of the test, since the arc predicts the place of the next phase before it arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the shape holds at every scale, the present can be placed on the larger arc as well as the smaller. The question asked in the garden, &#8220;Where are you?&#8221;, then concerns more than one person in one story. It is a question of position that can be put to a week, a century or an era, and answered by checking which conditions have already been met. The answer does not depend on who gives it, because the conditions are public and the test can be repeated.
