1. Who Speaks in Romans 7?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Romans 7 a voice says \u201cI\u201d and describes a split within itself. \u201cWhat I bring about I do not recognise,\u201d it says; \u201cI do not do what I want, but what I hate\u201d (7:15). For sixteen centuries readers have asked whose voice this is. Augustine first heard Paul before his conversion and later Paul the believer, and Luther built on the second reading the formula of a person at once just and falling short. In 1929 Werner Georg K\u00fcmmel argued that the \u201cI\u201d is a figure of speech rather than a confession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each answer names a person: the young Paul, the converted Paul, Adam, Israel, or everyone. Some modern commentators hear Adam behind verses 7\u201311, because the \u201cI\u201d lives before a command, receives it, is deceived and dies. The debate has never closed, because each reading begins from a view about who could speak this way. The question \u201cwho?\u201d sends the reader to the author\u2019s biography or to the church\u2019s teaching. A different question can be put to the text itself: from where does the voice speak?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That question has an answer that can be checked. If the \u201cI\u201d stands at a definite point in a known story, the verses will match that story\u2019s phases, and the match can be tested phase by phase. The story proposed here is the one Paul\u2019s own vocabulary points to, the garden of Genesis 2\u20133. Read as an account of how a human being enters language, the garden story has seven phases, from life before the word to the question of place. This essay sets the two texts side by side and lets conditions decide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. A Grammar of Movement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The comparison does not set word against word. A sentence has a grammar that carries meaning without having words of its own: subject, verb and object can be filled with any vocabulary, and the sentence still says who does what to whom. A story has a grammar of the same kind, a sequence of movements that can be told in any words. A prohibition, a desire that follows it, a deception and a divided act are movements, not vocabulary. This layer may be called a semantic grammar, the order of meaning beneath the words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genesis and Romans 7 share little vocabulary, and a word-for-word comparison would find almost nothing. Paul does not mention a garden, a tree or a serpent, and Genesis never says \u201cI do not do what I want\u201d. What the two share is the movement: a living person receives a word, the word brings desire, desire deceives, and the person ends divided and at a distance. That shared meaning is invisible on the surface and appears only when the texts are read for what happens rather than for what is said. The comparison follows that movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also why the order of the verses need not match. A grammar fixes the relations between parts, not the sequence in which a speaker mentions them. Paul names the command and the desire (7:7\u20138) before he says that he was once alive (7:9), but the relations are the same: life, then the word, then desire through the word. Where the words do coincide, as with one Greek verb, the coincidence confirms the movement rather than creating it. The conditions are written in the grammar of movement, not in the vocabulary of either text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Conditions First<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The method is borrowed from mathematics, where nobody asks who wrote a proof. The rules are agreed before the result, they are the same for everyone, and the result holds or fails whoever presents it. Here the rule is a condition written down before the verses are read: what a verse must contain to belong to a given phase. Only then are the verses compared. Because the condition comes first, it cannot be adjusted afterwards to fit the verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A condition is useful only if it can fail: if desire came before the command, the comparison would fail at that verse. The reading also names two levels in advance: the entry into language that humanity made once, and the passage that every speaker makes. Paul draws the same line in chapter 5, where hamartia<\/em> entered the world through one man and death spread to all because all missed the mark (5:12). The phrase eph\u2019 h\u014d<\/em> means \u201cbecause\u201d, not the \u201cin whom\u201d (in quo<\/em>) of Augustine\u2019s Latin from which the doctrine of inherited guilt grew, and 5:14 sets Adam\u2019s breach apart from the misses of those who came after him. Chapter 5 is the level of humanity and chapter 7 the level of the individual: the law that \u201ccame in\u201d (5:20) and the command that \u201ccame\u201d (7:9) are one movement told twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The individual\u2019s conditions are met in 7:7\u201311, where a command arrives, desire follows and the speaker dies. An earlier version of this essay counted chapter 5 as a failed test; read on its own level, it shows instead that Paul himself separates the two levels. Every condition used below is stated in the models, beside the verses it is tested against. Anyone can reject a condition, write a better one and run the comparison again. What cannot be done is to keep the result and change the condition after the fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Genesis from Outside<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Genesis 2\u20133 is told by a narrator who stands outside the garden. The man is formed and becomes a living being (2:7), receives a command, names the animals and is given a companion. The serpent speaks, the woman sees that the tree is desirable, and both eat (3:6). Their eyes are opened and they know they are naked (3:7), and when they hear God walking in the garden they hide. The narrator reports all of it in the third person: he, she, they.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even the first-person lines are reported speech. \u201cI was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid,\u201d the man says (3:10), and the narrator tells the reader that he said it. \u201cThe serpent deceived me,\u201d the woman says (3:13), and again the frame is the narrator\u2019s. The first words God addresses to the human being after the eating are a question of position: \u201cWhere are you?\u201d (3:9). The story ends with the man sent out and the way back guarded (3:23\u201324).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read as a story of entering language, the phases are plain. There is life before the word, the word as a prohibition, desire that arrives by way of the word, deception, seeing oneself, death and distance, and the question of place. Each phase can be written as a condition that a verse must satisfy, without any reference to Romans. The seven conditions in the models were formed from Genesis alone. They are then carried, unchanged, to Paul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Romans 7 from Inside<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Romans 7 the same phases appear, spoken in the first person. \u201cI was once alive apart from the law\u201d (7:9a) is life before the word. \u201cYou shall not desire\u201d (7:7) is the word arriving as a prohibition, and \u201cthe command came\u201d (7:9b) marks its entry. \u201cHamartia, taking the occasion through the command, worked in me every desire\u201d (7:8) is desire arriving by way of the word. Each line is a condition from Genesis, met in a voice that says \u201cI\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth phase carries the closest link. In the Greek translation of Genesis the woman says that the serpent deceived her, \u0113pat\u0113sen me (3:13); Paul says that hamartia deceived him, ex\u0113pat\u0113sen me, with the same verb in a stronger form (7:11). \u201cThe command meant for life proved to be death to me\u201d (7:10) answers the warning that on the day of eating there would be death (2:17). \u201cWhat I bring about I do not recognise\u201d (7:15) is seeing oneself and finding the aim and the act apart. Here, for once, the words coincide as well as the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seventh phase closes the chapter. \u201cWretched one that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?\u201d (7:24) is the question of place, now asked by the one who has been placed. Throughout, only one thing changes: the pronoun. That is why the \u201cI\u201d fits so many candidates and settles on none, for it is not a biography but a position, the one in which Genesis leaves the human being. Anyone who has learned to speak stands there, and the voice speaks for each of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ACT III \u2014 THE POSITION<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

6. Seeing Where One Stands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From that position, hamartia gains a precise sense. The Greek word meant a missed shot, and Aristotle used it for the error of a tragic figure who does not see his own mistake. In Romans 7 the will points to the goal, but the act aims at securing the goal: the speaker wants the good and reaches for certainty of it, and the reaching misses. The misalignment lies not in bad will but in the position from which the will acts. Genesis shows that position from outside, and Romans 7 describes how it is lived from within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two texts end differently, and the difference is the point. Genesis ends in distance, with the man outside and the question \u201cWhere are you?\u201d answered by hiding and blame. Romans 7 ends with the same question answered from inside, for \u201cWretched one that I am\u201d is not hiding but a location named aloud. In the language of drama this is anagnorisis, recognition, which Aristotle placed near the end of a plot, after the turn. The next sentence turns: \u201cThere is therefore now no condemnation\u201d (8:1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read this way, the two passages complete each other. Genesis gives the outside view of how a human being comes to stand at a distance, and Romans 7 gives the inside view of standing there and seeing it. The release in 8:1 does not come from trying harder, which would only be another way of securing the goal, but from the position being seen and spoken. The connection lost in the garden returns not by going back but when the distance itself is seen. That is the single claim of the models, and it can be checked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. A Reference Point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This text is meant to be cited. The same reading has been used for different readers: a scholarly article on the \u201cI\u201d of Romans 7, essays for a philosophy journal, a church weekly and a news magazine, and the earlier essays on this site. Each of them leans on one comparison, and this is where the comparison is set out in full. The models give the conditions, the verses, the level each condition belongs to and the case in which it would fail. They can be read without the essays and checked without the author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reference point is useful only if it is stable and open. The conditions will not be changed to protect a result, and if they change, the change will be dated and its reason given. The translations are the author\u2019s own from Hebrew and Greek, and anyone can set them against another translation or the original. The prompts and corrections behind the text are published beside it, so that every step can be traced. The reading stands or falls on the comparison, not on trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What remains is the question the garden asks first. Genesis puts it to the human being from outside, and Romans 7 answers it from inside, in the first person. Between the two lies the passage that every speaking person has made and no one remembers making. The models do not tell anyone where they stand, and they do not ask to be believed. They show how the question can be answered, by anyone, with the texts open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
